Tips for Closing Above-Ground Pools in NY

Return to Blogs Published: December 05, 2011 05:07 PM

With winter weather on the way, it's that time of year to close up your above-ground pool for the winter if you haven't already. While pool heaters help NY and NJ pools stay open a little longer, they only prolong the swimming season. Unfortunately, in this part of the country, it doesn’t last year-round.  Many people will agree that the most important part of winterizing above-ground pools in NY is properly balancing the chemicals for the pool before it is closed for the season. Using the wrong ratio will allow build-up of bacteria, scale and encourage corrosion as it lies dormant. When you open up the pool in the springtime, you'll want it to be usable. Aside from chemical balances, however, there are few other tips to a proper closing that will prevent pool and equipment damage from happening over the wintertime.

Equipment
Remove all equipment from the pool that won't be staying in it. This means ladders, ropes, boards, toys and rails. This will make it easier to clean the pool and also prevents these items from freezing or damaging the pool liner. After cleaning, disconnect and remove any additional hoses and connectors. Dry everything carefully and label all of the parts before putting them away in a secure, dry place.

Cleaning
Thoroughly clean the pool. Use a scrubber and be sure to check all of the areas that are usually covered by the ladders and other equipment. Allowing dirt to remain or accumulate will lead to stains that are difficult, if not impossible, to remove. Using automatic pool cleaners to remove all debris from the bottom always makes the job easier. Don't forget the skimmer and pump basket. Replace or clean the filter, too.

Draining Water
When draining water for the winter, be sure to only go just below the water return portals on the sides of the pool. This allows room for the water to expand, but prevents the pool from collapsing or damaging the walls.

Covers
Always use a pool cover that fits, and clip it snugly. A tarp draped over the top will shift and may leak. Consider a cover pump or a drain to prevent accumulation of water, snow and leaves on top of the cover.

After following the manufacturer's instructions for closing your above-ground pool, be sure to put away all chemicals and supplies. Choose a clean, dry, safe place away from the reach of small children, curious animals and flammable materials.
